Employee advocacy
Also called employee advocacy program, staff advocacy
What is employee advocacy?
Employee advocacy is when a company's employees promote the business on their own social media accounts by sharing company posts, writing about their work, celebrating launches and explaining what the company does. It is common on LinkedIn, where personal profiles often reach more people than company pages, and it works best when it is voluntary and genuine.
Programs range from informal encouragement to structured setups with a library of ready-to-share posts, suggested captions and recognition for active employees. The most effective advocacy usually comes from people writing in their own words about their own work, rather than reposting identical copy.
It ties into thought leadership when founders and experts share opinions and lessons, and into recruiting when staff show what it is like to work there.
Why employee advocacy matters
People trust people more than logos. Posts from employees reach their personal networks, which are often larger and more engaged than the company page's followers, and they come across as more credible.
Advocacy also helps hiring and sales. Candidates see real people enjoying their work, and buyers see the experts behind the product.
How to start an employee advocacy program
- Make it optional and explain why it helps the company and the employee.
- Write simple guidelines on what can and cannot be shared.
- Share a regular list of posts and story ideas employees can use or adapt.
- Encourage personal angles: what they worked on, learned or are proud of.
- Recognize and thank active advocates.
Employee advocacy FAQ
Why is employee advocacy important?
Employees' personal networks often reach more people than company pages, and their posts are trusted more because they come from real people.
Should employees be required to post about their company?
No. Forced advocacy reads as forced. Make it optional, easy and rewarding, and let people use their own voice.
