What is social media marketing?
Social media marketing is the practice of using social platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and X to promote a business. It covers posting organic content, talking with followers, working with creators and running paid ads, all aimed at building awareness, trust and, in the end, sales.
Most social media marketing splits into two halves. Organic work is what you post for free: feed posts, Reels, Stories, replies and comments. Paid social is advertising on the same platforms, where you pay to reach people who do not follow you yet. The two feed each other, because posts that do well organically often make the best ads.
A working plan usually includes a content calendar, a few recurring content themes, a posting rhythm per platform and a short list of numbers to watch, such as reach, engagement rate and clicks to the website.
Why social media marketing matters
Social platforms are where many customers discover new businesses, check whether a brand is real and ask friends for recommendations. A business with a steady, recognizable presence is easier to find and easier to trust than one with an empty profile.
It is also one of the few marketing channels a small business can start with almost no budget. Good posts can reach people beyond your followers, and the comments and messages you get back are direct feedback on what customers care about.
How to start social media marketing
- Pick one or two platforms where your customers already spend time, rather than trying to be everywhere.
- Decide what you want from them: awareness, website visits, leads or direct sales.
- Choose three to five content themes you can post about again and again.
- Set a realistic posting rhythm and plan it in a calendar.
- Reply to comments and messages quickly, because conversation is part of the job.
- Review your numbers every month and do more of what works.
Social media marketing example
A bakery called Crumb & Co posts a short Reel of the morning bake three times a week, shares customer photos in Stories and runs a small local ad before holidays. Its goal is simple: more people walking in on weekends.
Social media marketing FAQ
What does social media marketing include?
Planning and posting content, replying to comments and messages, running ads, working with creators and measuring results. Small businesses often do the first three and add the rest later.
Which social media platform is best for a small business?
The one your customers use. Visual local businesses often do well on Instagram and TikTok, while B2B companies usually get more from LinkedIn. Start with one platform and do it well.
How long does social media marketing take to work?
Expect a few months of steady posting before growth becomes clear. Paid ads can bring traffic faster, but organic results build slowly as the platform and your audience learn what you post.
