Dynamic creative
Also called dynamic creative optimization, DCO, flexible creative
What is dynamic creative?
Dynamic creative is an ad platform feature that takes several images or videos, headlines, text options and calls to action, and automatically combines them into many ad versions. The platform then shows each person the combination it predicts will perform best for them. Meta, Google and other networks offer versions of it.
In display advertising, dynamic creative optimization (DCO) goes further and builds the ad in real time from a template and a data feed, for example showing the exact product someone viewed. On social platforms the term usually means the simpler mix-and-match approach. Meta has folded much of it into its "flexible" and Advantage+ creative options, and names change often.
Dynamic creative is not a strict A/B test. Because delivery is optimized, it tells you which combinations got results, but not cleanly why one element beat another.
Why dynamic creative matters
It lets a small team test many combinations without building each ad by hand, and it helps delay creative fatigue because people see more variety.
It still depends on the inputs. Weak images and vague headlines combined a hundred ways are still weak, so the quality of the assets you upload matters most.
How to use dynamic creative
- Prepare several distinct images or videos in the sizes the platform needs.
- Write 3-5 headlines and primary texts that each make sense with any of the visuals.
- Turn on the dynamic or flexible creative option at the ad level.
- Let it run, then check the asset breakdown to see which pieces got the most delivery and results.
- Use the winning elements as the base for your next round of creative.
Dynamic creative FAQ
Is dynamic creative better than manual ads?
Not always. It saves time and finds good combinations, but manual ads give you cleaner tests and full control over which message each person sees.
What is DCO in advertising?
Dynamic creative optimization: ads assembled automatically from templates and data, so each viewer can see a different version, such as products they looked at.
