Organic reach
Also called unpaid reach, organic social
What is organic reach?
Organic reach is the number of unique people who see a business's content without it being paid for. It comes from followers' feeds, recommendation feeds such as For You and Explore, hashtag and keyword search, profile visits and shares. It is the free counterpart to paid reach from ads and boosted posts.
Organic reach on traditional feed posts has generally fallen as platforms grew, because there is far more content than time to see it. Platforms now rely heavily on recommendation systems that show posts from accounts people do not follow, which means a small account can still reach a large audience if a post performs well.
Short-form video has become one of the main sources of organic reach, as Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts are built to surface content from accounts you do not follow.
Why organic reach matters
Organic reach is the cheapest way to get in front of new customers. Every person reached without paying lowers the cost of building awareness and makes later ads more effective, because people already know the brand.
It is also a test lab. Posts that earn strong organic reach show which messages work, and those posts are often the best candidates to put money behind as paid social ads.
How to improve organic reach
- Post short vertical video regularly, since recommendation feeds favor it.
- Hook viewers in the first second or two so they keep watching.
- Write captions with the words people would search for.
- Make content worth saving or sharing, not just liking.
- Avoid watermarks from other apps and low-quality reposts, which platforms say they may show less.
Organic reach FAQ
Why is organic reach declining?
There is more content than people have time to see, and platforms rank feeds rather than show everything. Many also prioritize content types they want to grow, such as short video.
Is organic reach still worth it?
Yes. It costs only time, it builds a following you own the relationship with, and it shows which messages deserve ad money.
