Engagement
Also called social media engagement, post engagement
What is engagement?
Engagement is the set of actions people take on social media content beyond simply seeing it: liking, commenting, sharing, saving, replying, clicking a link or sending a post to a friend. It is a sign that content caught someone's attention enough to react, and it is one of the main signals platforms use to rank posts.
Not all engagement is equal. A like takes a second, while a comment, a save or a share takes more intent. Many marketers treat shares and saves as stronger signals, because they mean someone found a post useful enough to keep or worth passing on. Platforms do not publish exact weightings, but they say these deeper actions matter.
Engagement is often turned into a ratio called engagement rate, which makes accounts and posts of different sizes comparable. Raw engagement counts on their own mostly grow with reach.
Why engagement matters
Engagement is how a post spreads. Posts that get early reactions are shown to more people, both followers and non-followers, which grows organic reach without paying for it.
It is also a direct line to customers. Comments and messages tell you what people want, what confuses them and what makes them buy, which is useful well beyond social media.
How to increase engagement on social media
- Open with a strong hook so people stop scrolling.
- Post content people want to save or send: tips, checklists, answers and honest opinions.
- Ask a specific question in the caption rather than a generic one.
- Reply to comments quickly, which often brings more replies.
- Use formats that suit each platform, such as carousels and short videos.
Engagement FAQ
What counts as engagement on social media?
Likes, comments, shares, saves, replies, link clicks, profile visits and sometimes video views. Each platform defines its own engagement metric, so check what is included.
Is engagement more important than followers?
For most businesses, yes. A smaller audience that comments, shares and buys is worth more than a large one that ignores your posts.
