Viral video

Also called virality, going viral

What is a viral video?

A viral video is a video that spreads rapidly and widely online, as viewers share it and platforms recommend it to more and more people. It reaches far more people than the creator's usual audience, often in a matter of days. There is no fixed view count; going viral is relative to an account's normal reach.

Virality on modern platforms is driven largely by recommendation feeds. When a video keeps viewers watching, rewatching, sharing and commenting, the social media algorithm shows it to larger groups, which can snowball. Shares, especially private sends to friends, are one of the strongest drivers.

Viral videos are hard to plan. They tend to share qualities, such as a strong hook, emotion, surprise, humor, usefulness or relatability, but even experienced creators cannot predict which video will take off.

Why a viral video matters

A viral video can bring a flood of new followers, website visits and sales almost overnight, and it can put a small business on the map in its niche.

Chasing virality is risky as a strategy, though. Views from a viral video may not match your customers, and the spike fades. Consistent, useful content usually builds a business more reliably than waiting for one hit.

How to improve your chances of a viral video

  1. Grab attention in the first second with motion, a question or a surprising claim.
  2. Make it short and rewatchable, with no slow start.
  3. Give people a reason to share: it is funny, useful, surprising or says something they feel.
  4. Post often, since more attempts mean more chances.
  5. Be ready to follow up quickly if a video takes off.

Viral video FAQ

How many views is considered viral?

There is no official number. A video is usually called viral when it gets far more views than the account normally does and keeps spreading through shares and recommendations.

Can you make a video go viral on purpose?

You can improve the odds with a strong hook, a share-worthy idea and good timing, but no one can guarantee it. Consistency matters more than chasing one hit.
