Short-form video

What is short-form video?
Short-form video is video content that runs from a few seconds to about three minutes, usually filmed or edited in vertical 9:16 and made for feeds like Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. It is built to be watched in full while scrolling, with a strong hook, fast pacing and captions for silent viewing.
There is no single official cutoff. Platforms keep changing their maximum lengths: YouTube Shorts and TikTok allow several minutes, while Reels limits vary by how the video is posted. In practice, most marketing short-form videos run 15 to 60 seconds. Long-form video is anything longer, typically on YouTube, websites, webinars and podcasts.
Short and long form do different jobs. Short-form is good for reach and discovery, because platforms push it to people who do not follow you yet. Long-form is good for depth and trust: tutorials, reviews and stories that need time. Many businesses cut short clips from long videos.
Why short-form video matters
Short-form video is where much of the organic reach on social platforms is. A small business with few followers can still reach many people with a good reel, because recommendation feeds show content to non-followers based on how well it holds attention.
It is also cheap to make and test. Several short videos can be made in the time one long video takes, so a business can learn quickly which hooks, topics and offers its audience responds to.
How to make short-form video that holds attention
- Pick one idea per video; short-form punishes trying to say three things.
- Open with a hook in the first one or two seconds, as text and voice.
- Film or render in vertical 9:16 and keep key content inside the safe zone.
- Cut fast: change the picture every few seconds and remove all filler.
- Add captions, since many people watch muted.
- End with one clear call to action, or loop back into the start.
