Audience retention
Also called retention rate, video retention, retention graph
What is audience retention?
Audience retention is a video metric that shows what percentage of viewers are still watching at each point in a video. It is usually shown as a graph that starts at 100 percent and falls over time. Retention reveals where people lose interest, which moments make them rewatch, and how well the opening holds attention.
Platforms report it in a few ways. YouTube shows a retention curve, average percentage viewed and a comparison with similar videos. Instagram and TikTok show how many viewers stayed past the first few seconds and the average watch time. Retention rate is sometimes used for the share of viewers still watching at a given point.
Curve shapes tell a story. A steep drop at the start means the hook or thumbnail promised something the opening did not deliver. Bumps mean rewatching. A sharp drop near the end often comes from a long outro.
Why audience retention matters
Retention feeds directly into watch time and is one of the clearest signals platforms use to decide whether to show a video to more people. Better retention generally means more reach for the same content.
It is also the most practical editing feedback you can get. Each drop in the graph points to a moment you can cut, tighten or rework.
How to improve audience retention
- Study the first three seconds: start with the result, a question or a bold claim.
- Remove any pause, filler or repeated point the graph shows people skipping.
- Use visual change and on-screen text to re-engage attention every few seconds.
- Deliver the promised payoff before the end, then close quickly with one call to action.
- Compare retention across videos to find the openings and formats that work.
Audience retention FAQ
What is a good audience retention rate?
It depends on length and format. Short videos can hold well over half their viewers, while long videos usually keep much less. Compare against your own past videos and the platform's typical range for similar content rather than a single number.
Where can I see audience retention on YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, open a video's analytics and go to the Engagement tab. The key moments for audience retention graph shows the curve.
