Content calendar
Also called social media calendar, editorial calendar, posting schedule, content plan
What is a content calendar?
A content calendar is a planned schedule of the posts, videos and other content a business will publish, showing what goes out, on which platform and on which date. It can be a spreadsheet, a shared document or a scheduling tool, and it turns a vague intention to post more into a concrete plan.
A social media calendar usually lists the date and time, the platform, the format (post, carousel, Reel or Story), the topic or content pillar, the caption and the status of each piece. An editorial calendar is the same idea for blogs, newsletters and longer content.
Calendars also hold the fixed dates in a business's year: launches, sales, holidays, events and seasonal moments. Planning around them early leaves time to make better content than a rushed post on the day.
Why a content calendar matters
Posting regularly is one of the few things almost every platform rewards, and a calendar is how regular posting actually happens. It shows gaps before they appear and spreads topics so the feed does not repeat itself.
It also makes content batching possible. When you know the next month's posts, you can write, shoot and design them in a few focused sessions instead of every day.
How to make a social media content calendar
- Choose how often you will post on each platform, based on the time you really have.
- Pick three to five content pillars and rotate them through the week.
- Add key dates: launches, offers, holidays and local events.
- Fill each slot with a topic, a format and a short caption idea.
- Batch-create the content, then schedule it.
- Review at the end of the month and adjust the plan using what performed.
Content calendar example

Wed Carousel Pillar: classes "Which class is right for you?"
Fri Story Pillar: community "Member of the week"

What should a content calendar include?
At least the date, platform, format, topic and status of each post. Many teams also add the caption, the visual, a link and the goal of the post.
How far ahead should you plan social media content?
Two to four weeks is common for regular posts, with key campaigns and launches planned a few months ahead. Leave some open slots for timely posts and trends.
