Instagram grid

Also called grid layout, feed aesthetic, profile grid, Instagram feed layout

What is the Instagram grid?

The Instagram grid is the layout of post and Reel thumbnails shown on an Instagram profile, displayed in rows of three. It is often the first impression a visitor gets of a business, so many brands plan it for a consistent look: shared colors, fonts, styles and a mix of content types that reads as one brand.

In 2025 Instagram switched profile grids from square thumbnails to taller portrait thumbnails, close to 4:5 (some sources cite 3:4). Square posts are cropped at the sides on the grid, while portrait 4:5 posts fit it more closely. Reel covers are also cropped, so the important part should sit in the middle.

Some brands plan elaborate grids where several posts form one larger image. Most businesses do better with simple consistency: the same brand colors, typography and photo style, which supports brand recognition.

Why the Instagram grid matters

When someone taps through to your profile, the grid tells them in seconds what you do and whether you look trustworthy. A messy, inconsistent grid can lose a follower who liked the post that brought them there.

A consistent look also helps people recognize your posts in their feed before they see your name.

How to plan an Instagram grid

  1. Pick a small set of brand colors and fonts and use them on every graphic.
  2. Use portrait 4:5 images where possible, since they fit the current grid.
  3. Keep text and faces in the center so grid cropping does not cut them.
  4. Alternate content types: photos, graphics, carousels and Reels.
  5. Preview new posts next to your recent ones before publishing.

Instagram grid FAQ

What size are Instagram grid thumbnails?

Since 2025 the grid shows taller portrait thumbnails, close to 4:5 (some sources cite 3:4). Square posts are cropped on the grid, so 1080 by 1350 posts fit best. Instagram may change this again.

Does a consistent grid matter?

It helps first impressions and recognition, but content quality still matters more. Aim for a recognizable style rather than a perfect pattern.
