Instagram post size

Also called Instagram image size, Instagram post dimensions

What is the Instagram post size?

Instagram post size is the recommended pixel dimensions for images in the Instagram feed. As of 2026, the standard width is 1080 pixels, at 1080×1080 for square (1:1), 1080×1350 for portrait (4:5), 1080×1440 for the taller 3:4 format, and 1080×566 for landscape (1.91:1). Instagram changes these from time to time.

Portrait posts take up the most space on a phone screen, which is why many brands use 4:5 or 3:4 for feed posts and carousels. In 2025 Instagram switched the profile grid to 3:4 thumbnails, so square posts are cropped at the sides on your profile, while feed display is unchanged.

Instagram resizes anything wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080, and anything smaller up, which can look blurry. Every slide in a carousel uses the aspect ratio of the first one.

Why the Instagram post size matters

Using the right size stops Instagram from cropping off your headline, logo or product. Taller posts also hold more attention in the feed simply by taking up more screen.

Planning for the 3:4 grid crop keeps your profile tidy, which matters because people often check a profile before following or buying.

How to size an Instagram post

  1. Choose portrait (1080×1350 or 1080×1440) for most feed posts, square (1080×1080) where a square design matters.
  2. Keep text and key details in the center so the 3:4 grid crop does not cut them.
  3. Export at 1080 px wide, as JPG for photos or PNG for text graphics.
  4. For carousels, set every slide to the same size as the first.
  5. Check the post on your profile grid after publishing.

Instagram post size FAQ

What is the best size for an Instagram post?

A portrait post at 1080×1350 (4:5) is the most common choice, and 1080×1440 (3:4) matches the newer profile grid. Both fill more of the screen than a square post.

Is 1080×1080 still good for Instagram?

Yes, square posts display fully in the feed. On your profile grid they are shown as 3:4 previews, so the left and right edges are cropped there.

Why does Instagram crop my photo?

Feed images must fall between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 or 3:4 (portrait). Anything outside that range is cropped to fit.
