BYOK (bring your own key)
Also called bring your own key, bring your own API key
What is BYOK?
BYOK (bring your own key) is a setup where you enter your own API key for an AI or data provider into an app, instead of using the app's shared account. The app sends requests with your key, so usage is billed to you by the provider at its prices, and you can see and control exactly what you spend.
BYOK is common in open-source and developer tools, AI writing apps and automation platforms. The alternative is bundled pricing, where the app pays the provider and charges you a subscription or credits with a margin on top.
In security, BYOK has a second meaning: customers supplying their own encryption keys to a cloud service. In AI tools, it almost always means bringing an API key for model access.
Why BYOK matters
BYOK can make AI media cheaper and more transparent. You pay per use at the provider's rates, with no markup and no monthly minimum, which suits businesses that create content in bursts.
You also take on responsibility: keep the key secret, set spending limits, and choose apps that store keys encrypted and never show them back.
How to use your own API key safely
- Create a dedicated key for each app, so you can revoke one without breaking others.
- Set a spending limit or budget alert on the provider account.
- Paste the key only into the app's settings, never into chats, posts or code repositories.
- Check that the app encrypts stored keys and shows costs per call.
- Rotate the key if you think it has leaked.
BYOK FAQ
What does BYOK mean in AI apps?

Often, if your usage is light or uneven, because you pay only for what you use at the provider's rates. Heavy users should compare both with real numbers.
