Marketing automation
Also called automated marketing, social media automation
What is marketing automation?
Marketing automation is the use of software to run repetitive marketing tasks automatically, based on rules, schedules or customer actions. Common examples are email sequences that start when someone signs up, scheduled social posts, lead scoring, abandoned cart reminders and syncing contacts between tools. It saves time and keeps follow-up consistent.
Traditional automation is rule-based: 'if a visitor downloads the guide, send email two after three days'. It does exactly what it is told. AI marketing adds judgment and generation on top, such as writing the email, picking the send time or choosing which product to show.
Newer AI agents blur the line further, since they can plan and carry out several steps toward a goal. Most businesses combine both: fixed rules for reliable workflows, and AI for content and decisions where variation is useful.
Why marketing automation matters
Automation makes sure leads get followed up, posts go out on schedule and customers get the right message at the right time, even when the team is busy. It turns a content calendar into something that actually runs.
Over-automation has a cost: generic messages, posts that ignore current events and replies that feel robotic. Keep a person watching what goes out.
How to set up marketing automation
- Map one customer journey, such as signup to first purchase.
- Pick the trigger points: a signup, a download, a cart left behind.
- Write the message for each step, and decide the delay between steps.
- Schedule social posts in batches so the calendar stays full.
- Review results monthly and remove steps that do not help.
Marketing automation example
A bike shop sets up three automations: a welcome email when someone joins the newsletter, a service reminder six months after a tune-up, and a weekly batch of scheduled posts made in one sitting each Monday.
Marketing automation FAQ
What is an example of marketing automation?
A welcome email series that starts automatically when someone subscribes, or social posts scheduled in advance to publish at set times.
Is marketing automation the same as AI?
No. Automation follows rules you set. AI can create content or make decisions. Many tools now combine both.
