Large language model (LLM)
Also called LLM, language model, AI chatbot model
What is a large language model?
A large language model (LLM) is an AI model trained on very large amounts of text to read, understand and generate language. It works by predicting the next piece of text, called a token, again and again. LLMs power chatbots, AI writing tools, summarizers and coding assistants, and many can also read images and documents.
LLMs are built on the transformer architecture and trained in stages: first on broad text to learn language and facts, then tuned with examples and human feedback to follow instructions and be helpful. The amount of text a model can consider at once is its context window.
Because LLMs generate the most likely next words rather than look facts up, they can state false things confidently, which is called AI hallucination. Giving the model the facts in the prompt, or connecting it to tools and data through protocols like MCP, reduces this.
Why a large language model matters
LLMs are the engine behind most AI marketing tools: caption writers, ad copy generators, content planners and chat assistants. Knowing what they are good at (drafting, rewriting, summarizing, structuring) and bad at (exact facts they were not given) helps you use them safely.
They also change how people find businesses. More people ask AI assistants for recommendations, so clear, factual content on your own site matters for how those assistants describe you.
How to get reliable marketing copy from an LLM
- Paste in the facts it may use: product details, prices, offers and proof.
- Describe the audience and the brand voice, with an example.
- Ask for several options in a fixed format so they are easy to compare.
- Tell it not to invent numbers, names or claims.
- Check every fact before publishing.
Large language model FAQ
What is the difference between an LLM and ChatGPT?
An LLM is the underlying model. ChatGPT is a product, a chat app, that runs on large language models and adds features like memory, web search and image generation.
What does LLM stand for?
Large language model. 'Large' refers to the number of parameters (the learned values inside the model) and the amount of text it was trained on.
