Value proposition

Also called customer value proposition, UVP, unique value proposition

What is a value proposition?

A value proposition is a clear, customer-facing statement of the benefit someone gets from a product or service and why it is a better choice than the alternatives. It usually takes the form of a headline plus a sentence or two, and it answers the visitor's main question: what's in it for me?

A strong value proposition is specific and about outcomes. It focuses on benefits rather than features, speaks to a defined target audience, and avoids empty claims like "best quality" that every competitor could make.

It overlaps with the unique selling proposition. A USP stresses the one thing only you offer. A value proposition describes the overall value, which may include things competitors also offer.

Why a value proposition matters

Visitors decide in seconds whether a page or post is for them. A clear value proposition at the top of a landing page or in the first line of an ad gives them a reason to keep reading, which directly affects conversion.

It also becomes the backbone of content: most posts, ads and videos are a way of proving one part of the value proposition.

How to write a value proposition

  1. List your customer's main pain points and desired outcomes.
  2. Match each to what your product does to relieve or deliver it.
  3. Pick the outcome that matters most and that you can prove.
  4. Write a headline that states it plainly, then a subheading that explains how.
  5. Add proof nearby: reviews, numbers from your own records or a short demo.

Value proposition example

Crumb & Co, a bakery offering a bread subscription: "Fresh sourdough on your doorstep every Saturday. Pick your loaves, skip any week, cancel in two clicks." The headline gives the outcome, the second line removes the usual objections to subscriptions.
