Text to image

Also called text-to-image, T2I, text to image AI

What is text to image?

Text to image is a type of generative AI that turns a written description into a picture. You type a prompt, such as 'a red bicycle leaning on a brick wall at sunset', and the model generates one or more images that match it. It is the core mode of most AI image generators.

Under the hood, a text encoder turns the prompt into numbers that capture its meaning, and an image model (usually a diffusion model) uses those numbers to guide how it shapes random noise into a picture. Settings such as seed, steps and guidance strength change how closely and how consistently the image follows the text.

Text to image sits alongside related modes: image to image (start from a picture), image to video (animate a picture) and text to video (generate moving footage directly).

Why text to image matters

Text to image turns an idea into a usable visual in seconds, which makes it cheap to try several directions for a post, ad or landing page before committing.

Because the prompt controls the result, the skill shifts from finding a photo to describing one well. Clear, specific prompts save time and credits.

How to write a text to image prompt

  1. Start with the main subject and what it is doing.
  2. Add the setting and the time of day or lighting.
  3. Name a medium or style: photo, watercolor, flat illustration, 3D render.
  4. Add composition details: close-up, wide shot, top-down, empty space for text.
  5. Generate several versions, keep the best and refine the prompt from there.

Text to image example

A yoga studio wants a calm header image. 'Yoga mat' gives something generic. 'Sunlit yoga studio with wooden floor, three rolled sage-green mats, large window with plants, morning light, wide shot, soft and airy photo' gives a picture that fits the studio's look.

Text to image FAQ

What is the best text to image AI?

It changes often, as new models appear every few months. Compare a few on the same prompts for your use: photo realism, illustration, text rendering and price differ between them.

Is text to image free?

Many tools have a free tier with limits. Paid plans or pay-per-image APIs give higher resolution, faster generation and commercial terms.
