Content brief
Also called creative brief, content outline
What is a content brief?
A content brief is a short document that tells whoever makes a piece of content exactly what is needed. It covers the goal, the audience, the key message, the format and length, the points that must be included, the call to action, the deadline and any examples or brand rules to follow.
Briefs exist for every format: a blog article, a reel, a carousel, a product video or an ad. An SEO brief adds the target keyword and headings; a video brief adds length, aspect ratio and shot ideas; a creator brief adds usage rights and do’s and don’ts.
A good brief is short. One page is usually enough. Its job is to remove guesswork, not to write the piece for the creator.
Why a content brief matters
Most bad content comes from a vague request, not a bad creator. A brief makes the goal clear before any time is spent, which cuts revision rounds and keeps the result on message.
Briefs also create consistency. When every piece starts from the same template with the same audience and brand voice, the output from different writers, freelancers or AI tools stays recognizably yours.
How to write a content brief
- State the goal in one sentence: what should the viewer think, feel or do afterwards?
- Describe the audience and the problem or question the piece answers.
- List the key message and two or three supporting points, with any facts that must be accurate.
- Specify the format, length, size and channel.
- Add the call to action, deadline and one or two examples of the style you want.
Content brief example
Goal: get local riders to book a free bike fit
Audience: road cyclists, 30-55, riding 3+ times a week
Key message: a 30-minute fit fixes most knee and back pain
Format: 9:16 reel, 20-30 seconds, voiceover and captions
Must show: the fitting rig, before/after saddle height
CTA: "Book a free fit, link in bio"

What is the difference between a content brief and a creative brief?
A creative brief usually covers a whole campaign: the big idea, audience and message across many assets. A content brief covers one piece and gets more specific about format, length and must-have points.
How long should a content brief be?
One page or less for most social content. Longer briefs get skimmed; the essentials are the goal, audience, key message, format and call to action.
