Brand personality
What is brand personality?
Brand personality is the set of human characteristics a brand expresses and that people associate with it, such as friendly, sophisticated, rugged, playful or dependable. It shapes the visual style, the brand voice and even which jokes a brand will make, giving customers something closer to a relationship than a transaction.
A well-known academic framework, Jennifer Aaker's 1997 brand personality model, groups traits into five dimensions: sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication and ruggedness. Many teams also use brand archetypes as a shortcut for describing personality.
Personality is chosen, then shown. Saying "we're fun" in a bio does little. Fun shows up in word choice, color, imagery and how the brand replies to comments.
Why brand personality matters
Many small businesses sell similar products at similar prices. Personality is often what people remember and why they choose one bakery or bike shop over another. It gives brand messaging a point of view.
A defined personality also keeps content coherent across many makers, because everyone can ask: would our brand say this?
How to define brand personality
- Ask: if the brand were a person, how would customers describe them? Pick three to five adjectives.
- Check the traits against your audience and price point.
- Translate each trait into choices: colors, fonts, image style, words and humor.
- Write the traits into your brand guidelines with examples.
Brand personality example
A neighborhood bike shop picks "knowledgeable, unpretentious, outdoorsy". That means plain explanations instead of jargon, photos of real local rides rather than studio shots, earthy colors and a relaxed, helpful tone in replies.
