Brand awareness
What is brand awareness?
Brand awareness is the extent to which people in your target audience know your brand exists and can recognize or recall it. It ranges from vague familiarity with a logo to being the first name someone thinks of in a category. Awareness sits at the top of the marketing funnel and comes before consideration and purchase.
Marketers often split awareness into two levels. Aided awareness, or brand recognition, means people recognize the brand when they see it. Unaided awareness, or recall, means they name it without a prompt. Top-of-mind awareness is the first brand named.
Awareness is measured with surveys and indirect signals: branded search volume, direct website traffic, reach and mentions in social listening.
Why brand awareness matters
People rarely buy from a business they have never heard of. Awareness fills the funnel, and when someone needs what you sell, being already familiar makes you more likely to be chosen.
It also makes other marketing cheaper. Ads and posts from a familiar brand tend to get more clicks and trust than ones from an unknown name.
How to increase brand awareness
- Post regularly on the one or two channels where your audience spends time.
- Use short video formats like Reels and Shorts, which can reach non-followers.
- Keep your visuals and voice consistent so each exposure builds on the last.
- Partner with local businesses or creators who share your audience.
- Track branded search and direct traffic over time to see if it is working.
