Impressions
Also called views, impression count
What is impressions?
Impressions are the total number of times a post, ad or video was displayed on someone's screen. Every display counts, so if one person sees the same post four times, that adds four impressions. Impressions measure how often content was delivered, while reach measures how many different people saw it.
Platforms define and label impressions differently, and some have replaced the word with views. On several platforms a view now counts each time content appears or starts playing, which works much like an impression. Check the platform's own definition before comparing numbers across apps.
In advertising, impressions are the unit many ads are priced on. CPM is the cost per thousand impressions, and dividing impressions by reach gives ad frequency.
Why impressions matters
Impressions show the total exposure a brand got, which matters because people often need to see a message several times before they act. A high impressions-to-reach ratio means your audience is seeing you repeatedly.
They are also the base for other metrics, such as click-through rate, which divides clicks by impressions.
Impressions example
A bike shop's Reel is shown to 2,000 different people. Some watch it more than once, so the platform records 2,600 impressions. Reach is 2,000, impressions are 2,600, and each person saw it 1.3 times on average.
Impressions FAQ
Are impressions the same as views?
Often close, but not always. Each platform defines views in its own way. On many, a view of a photo or video is counted each time it appears, which is similar to an impression.
Are more impressions always better?
Not on their own. Impressions with little engagement or few clicks may mean the content is shown but ignored. Look at impressions alongside engagement and clicks.
