Social listening
Also called social media listening, social monitoring, brand monitoring
What is social listening?
Social listening is the practice of tracking conversations online about your brand, products, competitors and industry, then analyzing them to find insights and act on them. It goes beyond replying to tags and mentions: it looks at keywords, hashtags, sentiment and trends across social platforms, forums, reviews and news to understand what people really think.
It is often split into two parts. Social monitoring is the reactive part: spotting mentions and replying to questions or complaints. Social listening is the analytical part: finding patterns, such as recurring complaints, rising topics or how sentiment shifts after a launch.
Tools can automate the search across platforms, but a small business can start manually by searching its name, product terms and competitors on each platform every week.
Why social listening matters
Customers often say more to each other than they say to a brand directly. Listening shows what they love, what frustrates them and the exact words they use, which can shape products, ad copy and content.
It also helps you catch problems early and measure your share of voice against competitors.
How to start social listening
- List what to track: your brand name and misspellings, products, competitors and industry terms.
- Search those terms on each platform, in reviews and in relevant forums every week.
- Note recurring questions, complaints, praise and content ideas.
- Respond to direct mentions quickly through community management.
- Share monthly insights with the people who make products and content.
Social listening FAQ
What is the difference between social listening and social monitoring?
Monitoring tracks and responds to individual mentions. Listening analyzes the wider conversation to find trends and insights that guide decisions.
Do I need a tool for social listening?
Not at first. Regular manual searches work for small businesses. Tools help when the volume of mentions grows or you want to track many platforms at once.
