Kinetic typography

Also called moving text, animated text, kinetic type

What is kinetic typography?

Kinetic typography is text that moves on screen in time with a voice, music or rhythm. Words slide, scale, pop, rotate or appear one at a time, and their size, weight and motion add emphasis to what is being said. It turns text into the main visual of a video rather than a label on top.

The technique has roots in film title design of the 1950s and 1960s, when designers began animating opening credits. It became a popular style for lyric videos and explainers once motion design software made it easier, and it now shows up in reels, ads and faceless videos.

Word-by-word animated captions are a simple, common form of kinetic typography. Fuller versions change font size for key words, move the camera through the text or build words into shapes. It is one branch of motion graphics.

Why kinetic typography matters

Many people watch social video with the sound off. When the text itself moves and carries emphasis, the message still lands, and the motion keeps the eye on screen.

Kinetic typography is also cheap compared with filming. A business with a clear script, its brand fonts and a voiceover can make an engaging video with no footage at all.

How to make kinetic typography

  1. Start with a short script or audio track and mark the words to emphasize.
  2. Choose one or two brand fonts with strong weights so key words can stand out.
  3. Time each word or phrase to the audio, so text appears as it is spoken.
  4. Make important words larger, bolder or a brand color, and keep the rest calm.
  5. Limit text per screen and give every line enough time to be read.

Kinetic typography FAQ

Are word-by-word captions kinetic typography?

They are a simple form of it. Text appears in sync with speech, which is the core idea. Full kinetic typography usually adds more movement, scale changes and layout.

What fonts work best for kinetic typography?

Bold, clear sans serif or display fonts that stay readable at small sizes and in motion. Thin scripts and very condensed faces are hard to read when they move.
