Ideal customer profile (ICP)
Also called ICP, ideal customer
What is an ideal customer profile?
An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a description of the kind of customer that gets the most value from your product and brings the most value to your business. In B2B it describes companies, by industry, size, location, budget, tools and challenges. In B2C it can describe the best-fit individual customers. It guides who you target and what you make.
An ICP is usually built by looking at your best existing customers: the ones who stay longest, spend most, refer others and need the least support. What do they have in common? Those shared traits become the profile.
The ICP sits above buyer personas. The ICP says which companies to pursue; personas describe the people inside them, such as the owner who decides and the marketer who uses the tool.
Why an ideal customer profile matters
An ICP keeps marketing and sales focused on customers who are likely to buy and stay. Content, ads and outreach aimed at the ICP tend to convert better and produce fewer customers who churn quickly.
It also sharpens messaging. When you know your best customers are, say, independent cafes with one to three locations, you can use their language, their examples and their problems in every post, and build a better lookalike audience for ads.
How to define an ideal customer profile
- List your ten best customers by value, loyalty and fit.
- Note what they share: industry, size, location, budget, tools, problems and how they found you.
- Also note traits of customers who were a poor fit, to know what to avoid.
- Write a short profile with the must-have and nice-to-have traits.
- Use it to filter ad targeting, content topics and which leads to follow up first.
Ideal customer profile example
A company selling booking software for fitness studios defines its ICP as independent studios with one to three locations, two to fifteen instructors, class-based schedules, located in English-speaking markets and currently managing bookings by spreadsheet or messaging apps.
