Caption

Also called post caption, Instagram caption, social media caption

What is a caption?

A caption is the written text that accompanies a social media post, photo or video. It sits below or beside the image and can include a short message, a story, details, a question, a call to action, hashtags and mentions. A caption explains what the visual cannot and gives people a reason to react.

On most platforms only the first line or two shows before a more link, so the opening works like a headline. Captions can be short and punchy or long and story-led; both can work, as long as the first line earns the tap.

Do not confuse post captions with video captions. Video captions, also called subtitles or closed captions, are the words of the audio shown on screen. A post caption is the text you write in the description field.

Why a caption matters

The image stops the scroll, but the caption often decides what happens next: a comment, a save, a click or a purchase. It is where you add your voice, answer the obvious questions and tell people what to do.

Captions are also searchable. Instagram, TikTok and other platforms use caption text to understand posts and surface them in search, so clear keywords help people find you.

How to write an Instagram caption

  1. Write a first line that makes people want to read on: a question, a bold claim or a promise.
  2. Add the useful part: the story, the tip or the details of the offer.
  3. Use words your customers would search for, naturally.
  4. End with one clear call to action.
  5. Add a few relevant hashtags at the end.

Caption FAQ

How long should an Instagram caption be?

Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters. Short captions suit simple posts, while longer, story-led captions can work for loyal audiences. The first line matters most because it shows before the cut.

What makes a good caption?

A first line that earns attention, something useful or personal in the middle, and a clear next step at the end, written in your brand's voice.
