What is an AI avatar?
An AI avatar is a computer-generated person or character that appears on video and speaks a script. The avatar's face and lips move in time with an AI or recorded voice, so it looks like a presenter talking to camera. Avatars can be stock characters, stylized cartoons or a digital twin of a real person.
Most avatar tools combine three parts: a face model that generates or animates the presenter, an AI voice generator for speech, and lip sync that matches mouth shapes to the audio. A custom avatar of a real person is usually trained on a few minutes of footage of them, with their consent.
The term is also used more loosely for AI-made profile pictures and stylized portraits. In video marketing, it almost always means a talking presenter used in place of filming a talking head video.
Why an AI avatar matters
Avatars let a business make presenter-style videos (product updates, training, multilingual explainers) without filming. Changing a script means re-rendering, not reshooting.
Audiences can find avatars stiff or uncanny, and a fake 'customer' presented as real is misleading. Avatars work best for clearly informational content, and real people still tend to be more convincing for testimonials and personal stories.
How to use an AI avatar in marketing
- Use avatars for informational videos: tutorials, onboarding, internal training, translations.
- Pick a presenter style that fits your brand, or create a digital twin of a team member with consent.
- Keep scripts short and conversational, since longer takes show more artifacts.
- Mix in screen recordings, product shots or B-roll so the avatar is not on screen the whole time.
- Never present an avatar as a real customer or reviewer.
AI avatar FAQ
Are AI avatars good for marketing videos?
They are useful for explainers, training and translated videos where speed matters. For trust-heavy content like testimonials, real people usually work better, and fake testimonials are misleading whatever tool makes them.
Can I make an AI avatar of myself?
Yes. Many tools create a custom avatar from a few minutes of video of you speaking, often with a cloned voice. Read how the tool stores and uses your likeness.
